For the Beginning A to
Intermediate C classes, we use "Colloquial Cantonese" by Cantonese" by Routledge.
Colloquial Cantonese is divided into fifteen chapters. At the head of each chapter, a
short list
of the objectives which the chapter material aims to help you achieve.
The basic vocabulary of the chapter is introduced in the 'Vocabulary' sections, while the 'Dalogue'
sections offer some short, realistic dialogues. The 'Idioms and structures' sections give explanations of the idiomatic
expressions used in the dialogues, as well as comprehensive usage notes, covering all the grammatical constructions
introduced.
Beginning A (chapters 1-3)
Topics - Shopping, meeting people, interests and
leisure activities, etc.
Grammar and usage - Pronunciation, tones, indefinite pronoun, particles,
definite determiner, questions, personal pronouns, topic-comment
constructions, questions and question words, negatives, classifiers for
people, indefinite pronoun, locative marker, conditional marker, degrees of
likes and dislikes, etc.
Beginning B (chapters 4-7)
Topics - Telling the time, physical appearances,
prices, commuting, etc.
Grammar and usage - Obligation, changed status, possibility, point of time,
physical appearance, adverbial phrases of place, demonstrative pronouns,
emphasis, genitive pronouns, modification of plurals, completion of action,
comparing prices, duration of time, surprise, necessity, additional
particles, etc.
Beginning C (chapters 8-11)
Topics - What are they doing, do me a favor,
where is it, ordering food, etc.
Grammar and usage - Completed actions, location, progressive action,
anticipating completion, additional particles, serial construction,
distances, something additional, adjectives of size, preferences, etc.
Beginning D (chapters 12-15)
Topics - The weather, the clothes we wear,
traveling experiences, on the telephone, etc.
Grammar and usage - Possessive "di", predicting the future, months, days,
giving advice, everyone, recognition and slight surprise, idiomatic usage,
asking about and describing experience, confirmation, invitation,
anticipation, etc.
