A Tribute to the Cantonese/Toisan Cultural Program(ATC) is a volunteer group organized by descendents of Cantonese/Toisan people who were born in the U.S. ATC is part of the Chinese American Planning Council (CPC) Volunteer Program.

ATC’s mission is to promote the Cantonese language, culture and experiences Cantonese/Toisan people endured in America’s history. ATC’s mission is also to correct the myths about the Cantonese population and language. Cantonese is thought to be a hard language to learn.

In the classes, Chinese-Cantonese is taught through the natural process, to listen and repeat words in Cantonese as well as singing. The language is also taught in phonetics.

Cantonese is also thought to be spoken only in the Guangdong province of China, Hong Kong and Macau. In fact, Chinese-Cantonese is spoken throughout the world, in many different countries. Despite the fact that Mandarin-Chinese has become the official dialect in China, Chinese-Cantonese and Cantonese-Toisanese families to this day pass on their Cantonese and Toisanese dialects to their offspring and speak Cantonese/Toisanese on a daily basis.

For example,in the heart of NYC’s Chinatown, the most common dialect is Cantonese and many also speak Toisanese. Many Cantonese and Cantonese-Toisan people have spread all over the United States and live in and outside of Chinatowns.

****This Tribute to the Cantonese/Toisan Cultural Program has been initiated for those who appreciate Cantonese culture and language. It is especially targeting Cantonese Americans as well as Cantonese-Toisan American borns to come together, appreciate and take pride in the Cantonese culture and language.

You can help support the program simply just by spreading the word to others and become a member there is NO membership fee! We hope to meet others who take interest and pride for the Cantonese culture and language and get involved with the Tribute to the Cantonese/Toisan People Program.

As part of the Tribute to the Cantonese/Toisan People Program, we hope to contribute and have others contribute by helping to expand the program or just becoming a member of this site.

You can also become a member of the Tribute to the Cantonese/Toisan People Program by emailing tributetothecantonese -at- yahoo.com to be on the mailing list to keep in touch. You will be informed of any ATC events!

Experiences of the Cantonese/Toisanese in America:

Chinese people struggled, suffered and contributed greatly to America. They built the U.S Transcontinental Railroad, served in American wars and were detained the longest out of all the immigrant groups at the Angel Island Immigration Station in California. The Chinese also faced/experienced racial attacks and were even murdered with impunity. The Chinese were targeted legally by laws set against them. Despite this systematic discrimination, the Chinese developed Chinatowns and introduced Chinese culture to the general populace.
