Submitted by Violet, this short photo album gives a small glimpse of life in Guangzhou (also spelled Guang Zhou, Canton, or Gwong Jao), the capital of Guangdong Province in China.
With a population greater than all of New York City (12 million to the Big Apple's 8 million) and a history as vast and storied, Guangzhou has stood on the precipice of centuries of Chinese history and survived through all this turmoil to be the heart of China's recent economic resurgence on the world stage. European explorers came here to this port of call before Shanghai and it is the key to the vital Pearl River Delta. Click here for more information on Guangzhou
Where would you expect to find 19th Century European and colonial-era architecture? Why, on Shamian Island, in the heart of Guangzhou of course!
Quiet Street on Shamian Island Old Church on Main Street Expect to find history, friendly people, and a tranquil area with few cars
The rest of Guangzhou does not disappoint either.
7 goals were scored by China in this qualifying World Cup match
It was certainly a shame that the team was still eliminated when Kuwait made it to the next round, but as Zhou En-lai, China's first Premier, once said, Guangdong was the home of the Chinese athlete.
 Sunset scene by the River
Once home to hundreds and thousands of 19th Century merchants and dignitaries, this wooded section of Guangzhou still shows its nostalgic splendor in this sunset scene as a man practices tai chi by the river.
Guangzhou's Metro System An old woman with a basket
More everyday scenes of Guangzhou, you can see a human side to this city and that like here, people live and work for their dreams.
